Martin Brazier (M.G! the Visionary) on the beats back when he was in 3NP! (Third Nail Productions) and when David Tapang (T.M.O. 'the mental oriental') was in the crew! I did all the scratching on all but one song... PLUS, back when I went by "DJ CHECKMATE," I spit my very first verse on "Hardkore Rap Act" with Bryan Leonard (then called "Charlie Brown") HAHA!!! WHITE WASHED (previous name to Comunalien) REPRESENT!!!

The Beginnings of Christian Hip Hop

THIS WAS THE SONG THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME!

The above song was from the first Christian Hip Hop album that I felt was on the same level as the secular hip hop that was coming out around that time... or at least the closest. Until this album, I hadn't heard anyone with more boom and bass behind their tracks. ALSO a BIG thing for me was this had legitimate scratching to it! THIS was the one album that gave me some hope that something from the Christian Community could be just as dope as anything I'd been hearing on the streets for so long... STILL dope too... Oldschool now, but dope just the same!!!

I remember when this joint came out. This is back when sampling Parliament and Zapp & Roger wasn't played out! It was a time when the message of the music was abundantly clearer than it has been recently. Also, I've noticed that there was a lot more unity between groups and emcees as individual. There seemed to be more of a comradeship than an "out for self" kind of "ministry"/ career. I remember there used to be a lot more crews too! The furthering of this style of music was encouraged rather than challenged. There was style and class behind the scene and it was viewed as a bright patch in the inner city circle it was being spread in. HBCU's and emerging Christian Events were featuring these artists and it wasn't a cheesy or corny expression of some left field doctrine. I miss these days.

Another main release was also by S.F.C. headed up by Sup the Chemist called "Phase III." I remember listening to this album and being completely amazed! After hearing the songs on this album is when I started to dream about getting into production. This was one of the dopest tracks I heard on that joint. Probably because of the use of the metal sample. This just has so much power behind it! I WISH I could've seen these brothers LIVE!!!!

The first show I ever did was opening up for Freedom of Soul in 1991. I was 15 years old and didn't know how to use REAL DJ equipment! I had a month to learn on someone else's gear. Didn't know how even by show time... Kind of funny, now that I think about it. The sound they had was spectacular to me... Freedom of Soul that is... I got to chat a little with their DJ at the time, DJ CARTOON, and he showed me how to do a few things. I loved his style and went home after buying their cassette than night and literally devoured the whole thing!!! One of the best songs on their second album was this one... Peep!

No one makes these kinds of tracks anymore and I believe it's high time we returned to what made this Christian Hip Hop culture so strong and wonderful to begin with! Don't you?

This is a series of three albums that feature seven instrumentals each. Worship is easy when it's easily identifiable. When it's praise and worship in your deck, or if you're at church and the praise and worship team is playing, it's easy to "enter in" and plug yourself into God's presence. Everyday outside of those situation is where the test is. What are you doing when there are NO albums or bands playing, assisting you in your worship? What in and of yourself are you giving as worship? Sometimes this can be a straight up battle! Thus the phrase, "a sacrifice of praise." Well, for Nickels Hawkeye of Oldominion fame, his everyday worship experience is through giving of his ability to make music. These instrumentals weren't intended for any emcee in particular to spit on, but ironically, more emcee's are wanting to bless these instrumentals than ever before! Take a listen to Nickels, and his music, worshiping Jesus. I believe you'll see why they are considered as worship to him as well as to God. They're beautiful, as well as the other two, which are also included in this post. I don't really ever post things like this, but this is worth watching all the way through.

I know many of us don't go to church more than once or twice a year. Usually Easter and Christmas... THIS is the best Easter sermon I've ever heard, and I've been going to church several times a week since I was four years old. If you NEVER watch anything like this ever again, PLEASE watch this one ALL THE WAY THROUGH!!!! It's great news and INSANELY encouraging!

Equal or Unequal

Had some interesting conversations today. If you have the time, check them out for yourself in the comment section of my facebook page. If you do take the time to read all these you'll know where I'm coming from better.

Soundmind Artists does not stand for anything other than what Jesus stood for. Before anyone goes off about how a Christian Record Label shouldn't be doing..whatever, let me say that first. THAT BEING SAID: I don't believe that those that live an alternative lifestyle are necessarily going to hell any more than a born again Christian is when they go a mile an hour over the speed limit! That's a pretty drastic statement to a lot of, so called, Bible believing Christians. Must it be said, YET AGAIN, that Jesus chose the lowest of the low to kick it with, and eat with (which was a very intimate thing in that time and culture) to the point where His disciples were EMBARRASSED of Jesus' behavior! So why is it any different NOW days than back then? It really shouldn't be! If we are treating those with different beliefs any differently than Jesus would've treated them then we are NOT being Christ-like! DUH!!!! So for all those nut jobs out there that are doing crap like THIS, SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Okay, so now I'm done with that rant. Those who hate God and think that God is a hateful and evil God... I don't have anything to say to you that will change your mind so I won't go any further than saying, the only thing that will change your heart, if anything at all ever will, is a truly genuine EXPERIENCE of who God really is, what He is and does, and a KNOWLEDGE through that EXPERIENCE of His love for us. If God can reveal it to me, a hard headed moron to say the least, then I KNOW He can give you something just as real too. BULEEDAT!!!

The Other Music Festival

I remember a time when the unsung hero had a place to perform regularly. What some uppity labels would consider unsignable, those who had a more open mind toward what makes music great, congregated and enjoyed the actually company of these groups. Some bands made bigger names for themselves and did eventually get signed to a major label down the road, but it all started with this idea to give the under dog in the Christian Music Industry a place to shine and show their skills. They even made room for a little ground breaking hip hop! Comunalien, Lojique, 3NP!, Braille, Redcloud, Dirt, and many other groups got a chance to share the stage with the likes of MxPx, P.O.D., Blenderhead, SoulFood76, Twin Sister, Tragedy Ann, Squad Five-O, Five Iron Frenzy, The Orange County Supertones, Stutterfly, 90 Lb. Wuss, Thee Pirates, Stavesacre, Slick Shoes, and hundreds (literally) more bands that fail to come to memory at the moment. It was these experiences that cemented the idea of doing Christian Music for the entirety of my life. I wish there were more pictures, but alas, there are just great, wonderful memories. Wish everyone could've been there with us. R.I.P. TOMfest!!!

There's a really fun app that I've been getting increasingly more and more excited about called "digisocial!" It's almost like "instagram" but it allows one to attach sound to each submission! This is very awesome for people like me especially! So I wanted to encourage you to download this app if you haven't already.

Most of you know I have always been a Smashing Pumpkin's fan since their second album. I have been saddened by the idea that their latest work hasn't been as good. That is, until I heard this song! I've been REALLY getting into this song lately... Check it out.

Can you see why? It's melody and rythm signature are perfect together! Such emotion to it! I hope you got the same feeling I did when you heard it. Anyway... Thought I'd share.

On a rather different note, there is a group I'm in called Hundo, and I don't think many people have heard this kind of music come from my library too often. Hundo is Ricy Bauer (Vocals), Christopher Reeves (Guitar), Nickels Hawkeye (General Production), and Matt Ober (Percussion). Check out the first song we did...



We haven't done much more than this, but it's a dream of mine to get more material out before too long.

The passing of a human TITAN!

Just learned of my little cousin's death today. Jake Pike has always struggled with his health, and now he won't have to any longer. My Aunt Shirley Pike and him are probably basking in the light of Jesus in Heaven together. I wish peace and comfort to his family during this time of deep loss. I understand the pain and hurt and longing in these times, and I know that God's spirit will rest upon you. Jake was a great and friendly soul. I remember him as a child, and I wish I could've gotten to know him more while he was here, but he's in a much better place right now. No one really understands everything about stuff like this, but we have the ability to trust that God knows everything about this kind of thing and that Jake is being well looked after. We will miss and remember Jake forever. Love my family...

Last Night's J.P.S. Show

Unfortunately, we didn't get any documentation of the J.P.S. show last night. Sold a couple CD's and saw my cousins and their family though! My wife got to come, as did Elovi! Shout out to Eric Von Eschen (formerly of Eric V. & Tha Preachin' Pose') Thank you for bringing us out to minister! We had an amazing time and I believe that your Jr. High kids are going to grow and come to a completely new level of maturity under your leadership. You've always been a great roll model for me and I'm excited to see God use you with this group!!!  Honestly, I have really missed performing. Although I haven't done many youth group shows as of late, there is a familiarity while doing them... Like I don't have to worry about coming across too spiritual around these kinds of crowds. It was actually very refreshing. Got to listen to some preaching afterwards, get edified... You know. It was cool! I really enjoyed myself. The time spent in transportation to and from the show was great too. I feel like I get to know my friends better when we get ourselves out there and perform together. There's a certain 'gelling' that comes along with that. Not to mention, our true colors come out. I am glad I have my friends and that I'm getting to know them even more. I pray that we do more YOUTH GROUP shows, never thought I'd say that, and that we have more chances to connect with you in the REAL WORLD rather than only online! I always find it hard to come up with interesting titles for blogs. Just an FYI, I'd post these thoughts on facebook, but they only accept a certain amount of words!!! Kind of like twitter, but more than 140 characters. Not as many as I need though. This blog is the place to be! I'm lovin' this!

I've got three friends coming over today. Soul the Interrogator, Prawphit on Point and Rachel Donnell! Elovi and I will be hosting these fine humans and will hopefully have a wonderful time! We're going to be practicing the set for the January 30th J.P.S. show, and the February 8th Soul the Interrogator show. Also, we're going to be talking about a game plan for working with Rachel Donnell's singing and stuff! Wish you guys could all watch while we brainstorm... It's usually pretty entertaining. I really enjoy hanging with my friends.

Online Sword Storm

If you haven't noticed, Soundmind Artists is a Christ centered record label. This morning I got a message from my half brother. It was a pretty intense message. I gave him the best advice I could, but I must say, there was less impact in what I said than what the Holy Spirit guided me to share with him in the scriptures. Here is a pretty detailed list of scriptures about salvation. I've always needed this list and I thought there may be those, either now or someday, that may need them as well. Reuben AP and I used to call songs that we made with only scripture, Sword Storms. This could be called a SWORD STORM BLOG then eh??? ANYWAY, here it goes....


1. All Men Are Sinners:

Rom.3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God

Eccl.7:20 Not a just man on earth, that...sinneth not

Isa.64:6 All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags

Rom.3:10 There is none righteous, no not one

James 2:10 Whoever shall offend in one point (of law), guilty of all

1Jn.1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves


2. Salvation By Grace (Undeserved Mercy), Not Works:

6. Eternal Salvation:

8. The Results Of Being Born Again:


A. Spiritual rebirth makes you a new creature:

Rom.12:2a Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind

B. You will desire to work for Jesus:

Eph.2:10 We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works

Every so often, being an artist on Soundmind, I try and keep my image fresh and new. I've attempted changing my name 3 times in the last month alone. Maybe that was a little extreme. I know that "Nickels Hawkeye"  has been in my followers minds for years now, and I believe I may have forgotten how important that is.  So, by popular demand, ironically, I've changed my name back. Although I've gotten some pretty good responses from each name, people were used to Nickels Hawkeye. So, to mark the return of my trusty name, HERE is the new "Nickels Hawkeye' logo for this year! Feel free to do what you like with it.

I've got a show this Wednesday with my group, Justified Prodigal Sons. It starts at 7pm and is actually in a church called Turning Point in Marysville, Washington. It's been some time since I've done a show in a church. The last time was with Lojique (another one of my groups) and it was a good experience, but I believe we screwed up their sound system. That wasn't the first time though. Once, we blew out the system at a 3,000+ population show in Tulsa, Oklahoma! Right before the headlining band went on! We felt terrible. We did rock the spot though... pretty dad burned hard too if I may say so myself... So YOU should come through and check this show out just for the pure historical value of it! It's free too...
